Star Wars Box Office: How Rise Of Skywalker's Second Weekend Compared To Previous Movies - CinemaBlend

Daisy Ridley Rey looks intense with lightsaber Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Everyone knew Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker would top the box office charts again in its second weekend. The questions were 1) how much would it make, 2) how much would it drop from Week 1 to Week 2, and 3) how would it compare to the second weekend performances of past Star Wars movies.

So let's get into that. But first, check out the chart showing the other players in the box office game this holiday weekend, including newcomers Little Women and Spies in Disguise.

Weekend Box Office December 27-29, 2019 Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker
1. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker $72,000,000 Total: $361,796,816

LW: 1

THTRS: 4,406

2. Jumanji: The Next Level $35,300,000 Total: $175,456,805

LW: 2

THTRS: 4,227

3. Little Women* $16,525,000 Total: $29,000,000

LW: N

THTRS: 3,308

4. Frozen II $16,500,000 Total: $421,290,889

LW: 3

THTRS: 3,265

5. Spies in Disguise* $13,200,000 Total: $22,087,856

LW: N

THTRS: 3,502

6. Knives Out $9,725,000 Total: $110,237,095

LW: 5

THTRS: 2,022

7. Uncut Gems $9,552,812 Total: $21,077,481

LW: N

THTRS: 2,348

8. Cats $4,830,000 Total: $17,820,175

LW: 4

THTRS: 3,380

9. Bombshell $4,700,000 Total: $15,631,427

LW: 6

THTRS: 1,480

10. Richard Jewell $3,010,000 Total: $16,064,186

LW: 7

THTRS: 2,502

Both Little Women and Spies in Disguise just opened during Christmas week, with Little Women surprising everyone (including its studio) with such a strong opening against the big guns. Also, Uncut Gems keeps crushing, opening in 2,343 more theaters this week for a massive +3,857% box office gain. Trouble is, Adam Sandler fans may be confused by the movie, or maybe there's a different reason for that critic-to-fan disparity.

Also, it's worth noting that Little Women just barely edged out Frozen II, which continues to perform like you might expect a Frozen movie to perform in the holidays. Also, Jumanji: The Next Level is quietly slaying, and I say quietly because all of the talk is about Star Wars -- and the new movie's merits, demerits, and money -- and not Jumanji. Remember when Welcome to the Jungle shocked everyone by doing so well? No one is surprised anymore -- and it has yet to take over as #1 -- so it's going largely unheralded, apart from the cast's promotions.

Back to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker! That $72 million above is from this domestic three-day weekend. The five-day total from Christmas is $134.7 million. So far, Rise of Skywalker has made $361.8 million at the domestic box office and $363M worldwide for a total of roughly $724.8 million so far, per The Numbers.

Pretty great, right? Sure, that $361.8 million through 10 days is $6.3 million behind Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the same point in time, per Deadline. But Rise of Skywalker had a much lower second weekend drop than The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi had a larger opening weekend than Rise of Skywalker ($220,009,584 vs. $177,383,864) but also a steeper drop in Week 2. The Last Jedi made $71.6 million in its second weekend, a drop of 67.5%. The Rise of Skywalker's $72 million second weekend was a drop of 59%.

So in that sense, The Rise of Skywalker scored a minor second weekend win. However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens had a monster domestic opening of $247,966,675 and only dropped 40% in its second weekend. But Force Awakens is also the #1 domestic release of all time. It's that impossibly perfect sibling you really can't compare yourself to. Here's something I found interesting -- Rogue One also had the same roughly 59% second weekend drop as The Rise of Skywalker.

But yeah, by losing about $105,000 from $177,383,864 to $72 million, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker joined "The $100 Million Losers Club," as Forbes decided to call it. Here are others to face a $100M+ second weekend drop:

Avengers: Endgame - $209.7 million drop
Star Wars: The Last Jedi - $148.4 million drop
Avengers: Infinity War - $142.9 million drop
The Lion King - $115.2 million drop
Avengers: Age of Ultron - $113.6 million drop
Captain America: Civil War - $106.5 million drop
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - $105.3 million drop
The Avengers - $104.3 million drop
Incredibles 2 - $102.4 million drop
Jurassic World - $102.2 million drop
Iron Man 3 - $101.6 million drop

You can only drop $100 million in your second weekend if you had A LOT to start with, so props to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and all of the other films on that list. It is in good company.

I know some people were planning to wait until the crowds died down to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, spoilers be damned, so they were part of the second weekend crowd. What about from here? Does Episode IX have enough repeat viewing value to stay strong into 2020? Will more people who waited to see it show up over new year's? How many people are actually waiting to see the movie until it arrives on Disney+? I've been curious about that.

U.K. government accidentally publishes addresses of more than 1,000 celebrities - NBC News

The government of the United Kingdom apologized Saturday after it published a list of 1,000 celebrities and notables that included some personal information, such as addresses.

The New Year Honours 2020 list, which recognizes societal achievements and contributions by bestowing more than 1,000 honorees with terms of achievement, including knighthood for some.

The 2020 list of recipients, unveiled Thursday, included Sir Elton John (Companion of Honour), Olivia Newton-John (damehood) and director Sam Mendes (knighthood).

"The information was removed as soon as possible," the Cabinet Office said in a statement. "We apologise to all those affected and are looking into how this happened."

The office said that those whose addresses were revealed were being contacted.

The U.K. privacy group Big Brother published on Twitter remarks of its director, Silkie Carlo. She said the exposure was "inexcusable" and that government "doesn't have a basic grip on data protection."

Mahalia Dobson contributed.

Kim Kardashian Shaded Tristan Thompson at the KarJenner Christmas Party - Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Despite his tumultuous relationship with Khloé Kardashian and the entire KarJenner family — Tristan Thompson eagerly attended the KarJenner annual Christmas party held at Kourtney Kardashian’s house on Christmas Eve. With the entire KarJenner clan and their famous friends, the party was certainly a star-studded affair.

Thompson was there as a co-parent for his daughter, True. However, he’s also been adamant about getting back into the Revenge Body star’s good graces since he cheated on her with Jordyn Woods in February 2019.

Though she seems unwilling to let him back into her life romantically, she has spoken openly about forgiving Thompson for his past and building a friendship with him for the sake of their daughter. However, not everyone in the KarJenner family is in such a forgiving mood.

Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson had a great time at the KarJenner annual Christmas Party

After playing a game in Cleveland on Dec. 23 against the Atlanta Hawks — Thompson rushed to Los Angeles to be a part of the Kardashian festivities. Though he and the KUWTK starlet took no pictures together, it’s clear that they attended and were even chatty.

“Tristan is very charming and sweet to Khloé,” an insider told People. “She always wanted to keep her family together because of True. Splitting from Tristan in the past was extremely difficult for her. She is flattered that he is trying to win her back, but not flattered enough to be in a romantic relationship with him. Who knows what will happen in the future though. Right now she is focused on just getting along with him so they can have the best family time together with True.”

The KarJenners tolerate Tristan Thompson

This past summer, KarJenner fans were shocked when Kim Kardashian was seen in NYC dining with Thompson and a group of friends. However, the Skims founder was simply putting her best foot forward for the sake of her sister’s feelings. “They don’t hate him,” a source told RadarOnline about the KarJenner’s feelings towards Thompson. “He’s nice. They hate the way he treated her.”

For her part, the Good American founder only wants a healthy environment for her daughter. “I don’t want to be with him, I don’t. I appreciate how nice he’s being to me and he should be nice to me,” she explained on a recent episode of KUWTK. “I want us to have a healthy, kind and loving relationship where True can see her mom and dad hug each other when they see each other. I know that he’s trying. We are slowly moving into the direction of being friends as well as amazing co-parents.”

Kim Kardashian shaded Tristan Thompson at the Christmas Party

While Khloé Kardashian has decided to move forward with forgiveness — her big sister, Kim Kardashian, hasn’t quite softened towards Thompson. During the holiday soiree, the KKW Beauty mogul gave a speech welcoming her guest to the annual Christmas Party.

During her speech, she gave shoutouts to her family including Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian’s exes Scott Disick and Travis Scott. However, she completely ignored Thompson though he was standing right in front of her. It’s going to be a long road for the NBA star to truly prove he’s sorry.

PHOTOS: New "The Mandalorian" Baby Yoda Spirit Jersey Arrives at Walt Disney World - wdwnt.com

After the series finale of “The Mandalorian” yesterday, fans are pining for even more Baby Yoda to cope. (Don’t worry, Season 2 will be airing next Fall!) Now they can cozy up with Baby Yoda in this amazing new Spirit Jersey, which has finally hit the shelves at Walt Disney World.

The seafoam green Spirit Jersey features Baby Yoda perched and peeking out from the top, almost as if he was in some sort of baby carrier.

Do note that it’s a graphic of Baby Yoda (“The Child”) and not a still from the series.

On the back, big puffy letters show off the show’s logo in dark blue. Mando is seen in the “A”.

The Spirit Jersey retails for $69.99. We found it inside MouseGear at EPCOT, so if you’re looking in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you may want to have your tracker fob checked, or you’ll never collect this bounty!

You can check out our initial reviews of “The Mandalorian” here. And don’t forget to pick up some new tees as well so you can sport your love for The Child all year round.
