Kim Kardashian West Says Taylor Swift Is ‘Lying,’ ‘Self-Serving’ as Leak Talk Heats Up - Variety

In the wake of a leaked tape reigniting public fascination with the 2016 feud between Taylor Swift and Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West has taken to Twitter to lay into Taylor Swift, writing Monday night that the singer “has chosen to reignite an old exchange” that “feels very self-serving given the suffering millions of real victims are facing right now.”

Her tweets followed by a few hours remarks Swift made on her Instagram page Monday afternoon declaring that she was finally vindicated by a full leak of the famous 2016 phone call between herself and West “that somebody edited and manipulated in order to frame me and put me, my family and fans through hell for four years.”

In her tweets, Kardashian West resists the contention that she “edited” the original video, suggesting that everyone understood that the few minutes of snippets she released on Snapchat were not the entirety of the conversation. She concedes that her husband did not read Swift the “that bitch” language ultimately used to describe Swift in his song “Famous,” but suggests that was never at the crux of the dispute.

That was not the end of it Monday. Swift’s publicist, Tree Paine, responded later Monday night with a tweet of her own that included a screen shot of a statement she released in 2016, which had been quoted in part by Kardashian West.

“I’m Taylor’s publicist,” wrote Paine, “and this is my UNEDITED original statement. Btw, when you take parts out, that’s editing. P.S. Who did you guys piss off to leak that video?”

Kardashian West did not address the subject of who might have leaked the video in her tweets.

Her messages, in full:

“.@taylorswift13 has chosen to reignite an old exchange – that at this point in time feels very self-serving given the suffering millions of real victims are facing right now.

“I didn’t feel the need to comment a few days ago, and I’m actually really embarrassed and mortified to be doing it right now, but because she continues to speak on it, I feel I’m left without a choice but to respond because she is actually lying.

“To be clear, the only issue I ever had around the situation was that Taylor lied through her publicist who stated that “Kanye never called to ask for permission…’ They clearly spoke so I let you all see that. Nobody ever denied the word ‘bitch’ was used without her permission.

“At the time when they spoke the song had not been fully written yet, but as everyone can see in the video, she manipulated the truth of their actual conversation in her statement when her team said she ‘declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message.’ The lie was never about the word bitch, It was always whether there was a call or not and the tone of the conversation.

“I never edited the footage (another lie) – I only posted a few clips on Snapchat to make my point and the full video that recently leaked doesn’t change the narrative.

“To add, Kanye as an artist has every right to document his musical journey and process, just like she recently did through her documentary.

“Kanye has documented the making of all of his albums for his personal archive, however has never released any of it for public consumption & the call between the two of them would have remained private or would have gone in the trash had she not lied & forced me to defend him.

This will be the last time I speak on this because honestly, nobody cares. Sorry to bore you all with this. I know you are all dealing with more serious and important matters.”

The recurring brouhaha follows the online leak Friday of a video of a 25-minute phone call that transpired in 2016 between West and Swift, in which he described some of the derogatory lyrics he planned to include about her in his song “Famous,” shy of including the “bitch” language.

The call has West first asking Swift if she would be willing to “release” the song on her own social media accounts, before he describes the content to her. She chuckles when he tells her the “might have sex” line and says she understands it to be tongue-in-cheek, but seems to bristle when he brings up an alternate line he is considering, “still owes me sex,” as they discuss which version Kardashian West favors or is offended by. Swift is heard saying that she is glad he did not call her a bitch in the lyrics.

He then gives her a version of the “I made that bitch famous” line that reads more mildly as “I made her famous,” which makes her slightly bristle, as she reminds him she sold 7 million copies of the album that had won the VMA when he interrupted her speech back in 2009, later claiming to be unaware who she was. The call ends on an agreeable note, with West telling her that he plans to immediately record his vocal and send her the track, which he then called “Hood Famous,” and Swift says she’s “excited” for him to send it.

Kardashian West doesn’t address whether her husband forwarded Swift the track, as promised in the recording, although her acknowledgement that “nobody ever denied the word ‘bitch’ was used without her permission” would indicate it was not sent.

In her Instagram message Friday, Swift wrote, “Instead of answering those who are asking how I feel about the video footage that leaked, proving that I was telling the truth the whole time about *that call* (you know, the one that was illegally recorded, that somebody edited and manipulated in order to frame me and put me, my family, and fans through hell for 4 years)… SWIPE up to see what really matters.”

Swift fans are celebrating what they see as a moment of belated vindication in the video’s leak, after the singer was widely disparaged as a liar in the blogosphere and even some mainstream media in 2016 after Kardashian West’s own abridged leaks from the surreptitious recording. (Swift’s retreat from public view for a year and subsequent dark “Reputation” album were largely a reaction to the attacks at the time.) Fans of the Wests, meanwhile, have taken to social media themselves to assert that the full video does not include any fresh revelations.

Variety published a transcript of the full recording here.

Woody Allen details relationship with Soon-Yi in new memoir: 'Couldn’t keep our hands off each other' - Page Six

A bitter Woody Allen blasts his ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow for her “Ahab-like quest” to destroy him with sex abuse allegations and describes his romance with his current wife, Soon-Yi Previn, in graphic terms in his new memoir.

“At the very early stages of our new relationship, when lust reigns supreme … we couldn’t keep our hands off each other,” Allen writes of Previn in “Apropos of Nothing,” which came out Monday to little fanfare.

The book had originally been set to be put out by Hachette, but it was dropped after mass protests by employees, who were angry that the company would publish Allen, who has been accused of sexually abusing Farrow’s daughter Dylan.

In the book, which was put out by Arcade Publishing, the Oscar-winning director says he became embroiled in a romance with Previn in 1991, while he was still with her mother, Mia Farrow, with whom he has four kids.

Allen said he and Mia Farrow were basically apart by the time he began dating her adopted daughter, who is 35 years younger than he.

He recalled the day Farrow learned of the affair after discovering erotic photographs of her 20-something daughter at Allen’s apartment.

“Of course I understand her shock, her dismay, her rage, everything,” he said. “It was the correct reaction.”

But he also expressed no regret.

“Sometimes, when the going got rough and I was maligned everywhere, I was asked if I had known the outcome, do I ever wish I never took up with Soon-Yi? I always answered I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

He even shows how much affection he has for Previn, dedicating the book to her with the words: “For Soon-Yi, the best. I had her eating out of my hand and then I noticed my arm was missing.”

Allen was with Farrow for more than a decade, and recalled happy times with the “very, very beautiful” actress.

Their feelings cooled, however, especially after the 1987 birth of their one biological children, Ronan Farrow.

Ronan Farrow has been outspoken about his father, who he alleges sexually abused his sister Dylan, Allen’s adopted daughter.

Allen has long denied sexually abusing Dylan, and in the book, he speculated that the accusations arose from what he calls Mia Farrow’s “Ahab-like quest” for revenge.

“I never laid a finger on Dylan, never did anything to her that could be even misconstrued as abusing her; it was a total fabrication from start to finish,” he wrote.

Describing a visit to Mia Farrow’s Connecticut house in August 1992, when he allegedly molested Dylan, he acknowledged briefly placing his head on his then-7-year-old daughter’s lap.

“I certainly didn’t do anything improper to her. I was in a room full of people watching TV mid-afternoon,” he said.

Allen was never charged after two separate investigations in the 1990s.

Dylan has continued to say in recent years that she was abused.

Ellen Page and Greta Gerwig are among the actors who have said they won’t work with Allen again, and his most recent movie, “A Rainy Day in New York,” never came out in the US.

Amazon, which was to release that movie and three others, ended its deal with Allen. Allen sued and an out-of-court settlement reportedly was reached.

Grand Central Publishing said it would release Allen’s book on April 7. But the news was met with outrage from Ronan Farrow, who shared the Pulitzer Prize with the New York Times for his New Yorker investigation into Harvey Weinstein.

He was furious to learn that Allen’s book was being published by Hachette Book Group, the same parent company that released his tome “Catch and Kill.”

As The Post reported, Hachette employees staged a walkout, prompting Hachette to scrap the book. The book has now been published by Arcade publishers.

Stephen King was among those questioning the decision as an infringement of free speech, writing on Twitter: “It’s who gets muzzled next that worries me.”

Allen wrote, “When actual flak did arrive they thoughtfully reassessed their position” and “dumped the book like it was a hunk of Xenon 135.”

Arcade editor Jeannette Seaver said in a statement: “In this strange time, when truth is too often dismissed as ‘fake news,’ we as publishers prefer to give voice to a respected artist, rather than bow to those determined to silence him.”

Amazon Prime Video is streaming kids’ movies and TV for free, no Prime membership required - TechCrunch

Amazon is making a selection of family-friendly and programming for kids available for free streaming on Prime Video as a result of the COVID-19 health crisis, which has people trapped at home. The content is available to all Amazon customers, and includes a mix of Amazon Original kid and family shows as well as select third-party family movies and TV series licensed from studio partners.

Amazon says it’s continuing to work with content partners to widen the selection over time.

At launch, the U.S. version of the free service includes the following Amazon Originals: “Click, Clack, Moo: Christmas at the Farm,” “Big Diaries,” “Costume Quest,” “Creative Galaxy,” “Danger and Eggs,” “Dangerous Book for Boys,” “Gortimer Gibbons Life on Normal Street,” “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie,” “Jessy and Nessy,” “Just Add Magic,” “Just Add Magic: Mystery City,” “Little Big Awesome,” “Lost in Oz,” “Niko and the Sword of Light,” “Pete the Cat,” “Sigmund and the Sea Monster,” “The Snowy Day,” “The Stinky and Dirty Snow,” “The Kicks,” “Tumble Leaf” and “Wisenpoof.”

Among the licensed content in the U.S., you’ll find: “Arthur,” “Bali,” “Caillou,” “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Design Squad,” “Dinosaur Train,” “FETCH! With Ruff Ruffman,” “Kraft’s Creatures,” “Martha Speaks,” “Nature Cat,” “Odd Quad,” “Peep and the Big Wide World,” “Peg + Cat,” “Postcards from Buster,” “Reading Rainbow,” “Ready Jet Go!,” “Wild Kratts,” “WordGirl,” “WorldWorld,” “Zoboomafoo,” “Rugrats All Grown Up” and “Knight Squad.”

Amazon confirmed to TechCrunch that Amazon Original children and family TV series will be available for free worldwide, but licensed content will vary by country.

The majority of the content, at present, is aimed at the preschool crowd up to younger school-agers. The selection doesn’t include recently released movies or other popular G-rated or PG-rated box office hits that parents will also enjoy. But the offering will help parents who are struggling to work from home and are using the TV as a babysitter of sorts to keep little ones occupied.

Typically, Amazon makes free TV and movies available only to Prime subscribers, as one of the many perks of Amazon’s Prime membership program. But in this case, consumers will only need to create a free Amazon.com account, if they don’t already have one, in order to watch the free programs.

Amazon isn’t the first streamer to add free content to help families staying in quarantine and self-isolating during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Last week, Sling TV launched free streaming that included news and entertainment, as well as kids’ TV. Hulu added free live TV news to its on-demand service on Friday. Elsewhere, studios are breaking the theatrical window to deal with ticket sale losses as theaters close down. NBCU recently said it was bringing “The Hunt,” “The Invisible Man” and “Emma,” to home viewers.

Disney, meanwhile, is making its own movies available early as well, including through its streaming service, Disney+, where both “Frozen II” and “Onward” are arriving ahead of schedule. (“Frozen II” is live now. “Onward” arrives on April 3).

Amazon says the new free programs will be available on the Prime Video app, which is a free download on  compatible smart TVs, mobile devices, Fire TV, Fire TV stick, Fire tablets, Apple TV, game consoles, Chromecast or via Prime Video on the web.

Woody Allen Releases Memoir, Declares Himself ‘Toxic Pariah and Menace to Society’ - IndieWire

Woody Allen’s controversial memoir “Apropos of Nothing” has found a new home at Arcade Publishing and is being released today, The Associated Press reports. Arcade picked up distribution rights to the memoir after it was dropped at the beginning of the month by Hachette following widespread backlash. Arcade said in a statement: “The book is a candid and comprehensive personal account by Woody Allen of his life, ranging from his childhood in Brooklyn through his acclaimed career in film, theater, television, print and standup comedy, as well as exploring his relationships with family and friends.”

The memoir includes a postscript in which Allen claims that Hachette agreed to publish the book even though it was aware Allen is a “toxic pariah and menace to society.” Allen writes, “When actual flak did arrive they thoughtfully reassessed their position and dumped the book like it was a hunk of Xenon 135.” Hachette’s original announcement about releasing Allen’s memoir resulted in staff walkouts and condemnation from Ronan and Dylan Farrow, the latter of whom has accused Allen of molesting her when she was a child.

According to the AP, Allen writes in “Apropos of Nothing” that Dylan Farrow’s molestation allegation was a result of Mia Farrow’s “Ahab-like quest” for revenge against him. Allen writes, “I never laid a finger on Dylan, never did anything to her that could be even misconstrued as abusing her; it was a total fabrication from start to finish.” Allen admits that he did place his head on Dylan’s lap during an August 1992 visit to Farrow’s Connecticut house, but he maintains, “I certainly didn’t do anything improper to her. I was in a room full of people watching TV mid-afternoon.”

In the postscript, Allen writes that he can’t deny the fallout from Farrow’s accusation “plays into my poetic fantasies to be an artist whose work isn’t seen in his own country and is forced, because of injustice, to have his public abroad. Henry Miller comes to mind. D.H. Lawrence. James Joyce. I see myself standing amongst them defiantly. It’s about at that point my wife wakes me up and says, ‘You’re snoring.’”

Jeannette Seaver, the editor of Arcade Publishing, defended the release of Allen’s memoir in a statement that reads: “In this strange time, when truth is too often dismissed as ‘fake news,’ we as publishers prefer to give voice to a respected artist, rather than bow to those determined to silence him.”

Danai Gurira reveals her thoughts on Michonne’s exit from The Walking Dead - The A.V. Club

Warning: There are spoilers below for last night’s episode of The Walking Dead.

Last night, The Walking Dead underwent another major transformation as it said goodbye to Michonne, the formerly solitary fighter who slowly became one of the dominant forces on the series, eventually even having a kid with Rick Grimes and running security for Alexandria. It was a very good episode—much better than the ignoble end Rick Grimes received—but you may be wondering what exactly led the show’s creative team to think, “You know how we should send off Michonne? With drugs.”

Wonder no more. In a new interview with Variety, actor Danai Gurira discusses her character’s departure from the series, and she opens up about some of those creative choices—choices which, from the sound of it, she had a bit of a hand in shaping. “The writers came up with the whole architecture,” Gurira explains. “Angela [Kang, showrunner] talked me through it and then she was very generous in letting me collaborate with her on aspects of it.” They wanted Michonne to reveal some emotionally vulnerable elements of her psyche, and when your character is that much of a badass, it seems powerful hallucinogens are necessary to expose your soft side:

How do you get Michonne that vulnerable? The answer is you have to drug the heck out of her. I had never heard of [jimson weed] before. Then I looked it up and I read some stories from people who had taken it and I was like, ‘Holy goodness, what we show is very mild.’

The resulting story, which revolves around a drug-fueled fantasy about what would have happened to Michonne had she never stopped to help Andrea in the woods way back in the day, ends with her forgiving the man who imprisons and drugs her. Michonne then sets off on a mission to find the long-lost Rick, whose boots and personal items she stumbles upon, suggesting he’s still alive. Gurira calls the alternate-history narrative a “very satisfying” one, saying it was “chilling because it really does raise the idea of how one choice could make someone such a different person. She made one choice to help one woman, and that choice puts her on a journey.”

As far as whether Michonne would ever make another appearance in the universe of The Walking Dead, Gurira says, “We’ll see,” which seems like a very polite way of avoiding shouting out, “Fuck no.” You can read our full review of the episode here.

Harvey Weinstein tests positive for coronavirus - NBC News

Convicted rapist and disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for the coronavirus, the head of the New York state corrections officers union told NBC News.

Weinstein, 68, was transferred to Wende Correctional Facility, a maximum-security state prison east of Buffalo, on Wednesday after being sentenced to 23 years in prison on March 11. He was found guilty of third-degree rape and first degree criminal sexual act in a landmark #MeToo case.

At Wende, Weinstein tested positive for the coronavirus, Michael Powers, president of the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association, told NBC News on Monday morning. The news was first reported by The Niagara Gazette on Sunday.

Weinstein is currently in isolation at the prison, Powers said, and several staff at the facility have also been quarantined who were in contact with him.

Correctional officers are struggling to get access to personal protective equipment (PPE), a broad term for the gear, such as masks, glasses, gowns and respirators, Powers said. His members need it to do their jobs safely.

"PPE is vital for us in our facilities," Powers said. "While a lot of people were working from home, we are keeping our community safe."

March 12, 202001:52

A representative for Weinstein told NBC News on Sunday afternoon that they were not aware of Weinstein's test. A lawyer for Weinstein told Reuters on Sunday evening they had not been notified of the diagnosis.

Before being transferred to federal prison, Weinstein was being held in Rikers Island Jail, where there have been multiple cases of the coronavirus among those in custody and the correctional officers at the facility.

Weinstein also was went to Bellevue Hospital during his time in jail for heart problems, and has high blood pressure and diabetes — factors which would put him at greater risk of falling very ill from the coronavirus.
